Types of Benefits
Birth Benefit
Every family in Flanders is entitled to a birth benefit ("startbedrag") of 1269.25 euro for the birth or adoption of a child. (data updated September 2025)
*Please note that this is a one-time payment.
- Paid 2 months before the expected delivery date (or once the child joins your family if adopted)
- For adoptions, include the adoption petition or international placement decision
- Entitiled to apply up to 5 years after the child is born

Monthly Child Benefits
After your child is born, you will also receive monthly child benefits of 184.62 euro (per child). This is called the "Groeipakket ".
- Payments continue until the child turns 18 (and longer if they are studying or meet specific conditions)

School Bonus
Every child in Flanders receives a school bonus ("schooltoeslag") in August to help with school-related costs. The amount depends on your child's age.

Orphan Allowance & Social Allowance
- Orphan Allowance: Extra monthly support if a parent has passed away
- Social Allowance: Extra monthly amount for low-income or single-parent families
